Funded childcare

The government provides universal funding for all 3 and 4 year old children and some 2 year olds to attend a registered early years provision.

From September 2017, eligible 3 and 4-year olds will be entitled to 1140 hours per year (30 hours a week term time).

2 Year Old Funding

From September 2014 the law changed to allow more two year olds to benefit from free childcare than ever before.


Eligible children can receive funded part time early years education from the term after their second birthday.

3 and 4 Year Old Funding

All 3 and 4-year-olds can have up to 15 hours of free childcare each week for 38 weeks a year, starting the term following their third birthday. Some childcare providers offer 12 hours a week over 48 weeks of the year (up to 570 hours).

Additional 15 hours

From September 2017, eligible working parents will be able to claim an additional 15 hours of funded childcare per week, for 38 weeks each year (or stretched over 48 weeks). This is on top of the universal entitlement of 15 hours.
